# How to Perform Istikhara for Marriage

Istikhara (الاستخارة) is one of the most beautiful gifts in Islam — seeking Allah's guidance when making important decisions. Marriage is perhaps the most important decision of your life, making Istikhara essential.

What is Istikhara?

Istikhara literally means "seeking what is good." It is a prayer in which you ask Allah (SWT) to guide you toward what is best for your deen and dunya.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"If any one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two rak'ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say: 'Allaahumma inni astakheeruka bi 'ilmika...'" (Bukhari)

Step-by-Step Guide to Istikhara for Marriage

Step 1: Make Wudu

Begin in a state of ritual purity.

Step 2: Pray Two Rakat (Non-Obligatory)

Pray two non-obligatory (nafl) rakahs with the intention of Istikhara.

Step 3: Recite the Dua of Istikhara

Translation:

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty..."

When you reach the phrase "this matter" (haadhaa al-amr), think of or mention the person you are considering for marriage.

Step 4: Repeat if Needed

There is no fixed number of times. Repeat as needed until your heart feels at ease.

Common Misconceptions About Istikhara

  • **Dreams are not required**: Istikhara does not necessarily result in a dream. The answer may come as a feeling of comfort or discomfort.
  • **Not a magic 8-ball**: Istikhara is about divine guidance within the process of reasonable research and consultation.
  • **Can be done multiple times**: For such an important decision, repeating Istikhara is perfectly appropriate.

After Istikhara — Next Steps

After Istikhara, consult your family, do your due diligence (check the person's character, deen, and family), and proceed with confidence in Allah's plan.
