Everything you need to know about Mahr in nikah. What is mahr, how to determine the amount, and its importance in Islamic marriage.

# Mahr (Dower) in Islamic Marriage — Complete Guide

Mahr (also spelled Mehr or Meher) is a mandatory gift from the groom to the bride as part of an Islamic marriage contract. It is one of the fundamental rights of a Muslim woman.

What is Mahr?

Allah says in the Quran:

"And give the women their dowries graciously." (An-Nisa: 4)

Mahr is not a "price" for the bride. It is a gift that symbolizes the groom's commitment and the bride's financial security.

Types of Mahr

1. Mahr Mu'ajjal (Prompt Mahr)

Paid immediately at the time of nikah. This is strongly recommended.

2. Mahr Mu'ajjal (Deferred Mahr)

Agreed to be paid at a future date or upon divorce/death. This must be clearly specified.

How Much Should Mahr Be?

There is no fixed minimum in the Hanafi school (the most common madhab among Indian Muslims), but it should be:

  • **Meaningful**: Something of real value
  • **Agreed upon**: Both parties must agree
  • **Not burdensome**: Islam does not want to create hardship

The Prophet ﷺ said the best nikah is one that is easiest (least burdensome).

Mahr in India — Common Practices

In India, mahr amounts vary widely by community:

  • **Symbolic mahr**: A Quran, some gold jewelry
  • **Cash mahr**: ₹1,001 to ₹1,00,000+
  • **Property mahr**: A plot of land or property

Many Indian Muslim families use a "combination" — a small prompt mahr and a larger deferred amount.

Important Points for Indian Muslims

  1. Mahr must be recorded in the Nikah Nama (marriage contract)
  2. The bride can waive her mahr voluntarily — but she should never be pressured
  3. Unpaid mahr is a debt on the husband — it must be paid
